Do's and Don'ts of Nail Care

1. Do's

" Leave your nails without nail polish once in a while atleast inorder to allow them to breathe.

" Keep a pack of hand lotion or cream near the kitchen sink and use it each time after washing your hands.

" Wear gloves while doing housework or gardening and rub some hand cream or lotion before putting on the gloves.

" Apply oil to your nails whenever possible inorder to strengthen them.

" Include ample quantities of calcium and vitamin A in your daily diet.

" Keep your manicure set clean inorder to prevent any infection.

" Have a professional manicure done atleast once a month.

" Prolonged exposure to the sun is not good for nails and a lot of swimming will dry them. This can be encountered by keeping the nails and cuticles well moisturised.

" Before doing chores like dusting or gardening, first dig the nails into a soap bar. This prevents dirt from getting embedded under them and also make them easier to clean later.

" To keep nail polish intact in the bath, smoothen a little skin cream on it before going for a bath.

" If a nail breaks, we can get, professional help in fixing 'false' nails. Otherwise, try to file them down. If the break is bad, remove all the polish from that nail and mend the break with a small piece of cello-tape, cut to fit. Then re-apply polish.

" If nails are brittle and break or split easily, keep them oiled.

2. Don'ts

" Don't use your nails on a job that can be done just as well with a pair of scissors, pliers or a hammer

" Don't file nails when they are damp.

" Don't cut cuticles

" Don't wash clothes or dishes in very hot water

" Don't bite or chew your nails.

" Don't clean your nails with a sharp metal instrument - use a nail brush and orange stick instead.

" Don't be seen with chipped nail polish - it is a sign of careless grooming.

" Don't leave your hands in detergent for long.

" Don't peel-off your nail polish as you wish to - always use a nail-polish remover.

1. Nail Polish Selection. Whenever we use nail polish, we should select the shade carefully. Deep toned polish looks good on long and slender nails. Pale colours make short nails look longer and they also look good on small, delicate-looking hands.

2. Nail- Length Decision. As regards the nail-length, not everyone can manage long nail. If we do a lot of typing or housework , play the guitar or are a sports freak, long nail are not for us.

File rather than cut as cutting weaken the nail and cause it to flake. File in one direction only from sides to centre, using the softer side of an emery board, not a metal file. Aim for a rounded tip: the shape at the tip should reflect the shape at the base to make a perfect oval.

USEFUL TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL HANDS

" If your elbows have been darkened, apply a mixture of lemon juice mixed with milk cream. Wash off after 30 mts.

" To get rid of elbow darkness, you can also apply a mixture of cucumber juice and lemon juice ( in equal quantities). Wash off after 15 mts.

" If there is a lot of hair on your hands, apply a smooth paste of gramflour and oil on them. Wash off after 30 mts.

" Massaging hands with almond oil is most ideal inorder to maintain them in a good condition.

" If the hands are stained or discoloured, rub a little lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide on the stain after washing and before drying the hands. This lightens the stain.

" For big hands, wear exotic bracelets high on the arm and wide ornamental rings.

" Slim, small hands call for daintiness in the choice of jewellery and nail polish shade. Narrow bracelets and rings with delicate elongated settings look the prettiest.

" To suit small square hands use small and simple jewellery.

" On wrinkled hands, use rich cream after steaming the hands

" As one matures, one tends to get freckles on the hand. Use a good bleaching cream for this. Although the results are temporary, they are quite effective.

Nail Care FAQs #101 - Q & A

Q. My natural nails are fairly long and strong, however, when they reach a certain length, they break. What can I do to keep them from breaking?

To maintain the length of your natural nails, you may want to think about having a fiberglass overlay applied to them. During this procedure a thin layer of fiberglass is brushed on to the natural nail, creating a strong protective coating to help prevent breakage. Fiberglass overlays do require regular maintenance though (a fill every two weeks), so if you are not willing to commit to this, look for professional products containing natural proteins and strengtheners such as calcium. OPI Nail Treatments like Nail Envy® are a sure bet to healthly beautiful nails.

Q. Is it true that eating Jello will make your nails stronger?

First of all, it is not actually Jello, but the gelatin ingredient in it which you are referring to. Secondly, while gelatin can improve the overall health of your nails, you could not possibly consume enough to make a substantial difference. Your nails do not receive a concentrated amount of gelatin because once absorbed into the blood stream it is distributed to different areas of the body (hair, nails, etc), wherever it is needed most. If you are looking to strengthen your natural nails, look into getting a fiberglass overlay or investing in some natural nail fortifying products at a salon in your area

Q. Is it possible to get AIDS or any other types of infectious diseases if the implements being used for my manicure are not properly sterilized between customers?

Yes, there is the possibility of contracting a disease like AIDS if the tools are not cleaned but it is not probable. When you are working with blood, if there is blood on the implements there is the chance of contracting AIDS but the chances are pretty slim. The most common infections contracted would be Hepatitis and Tuberculosis since the virus lives longer and is much stronger. Beauty Store Tip: You should ask your Nail technician to sanitize and disinfect their tools and their working area prior to working on you to thoroughly kill bacteria. If they are offended - go elsewhere!

Q. Can you suggest any methods to help me stop biting my nails?

Nail extensions and regular manicures are the best remedy for nail biters. Nail extensions will not only make your hands look nicer, but will also prevent you from biting nails each time you bring your hand to your mouth. If you don't want to apply extensions, you may want to try one of the anti-nail biting products. The clear liquid is applied to the nail like polish, but leaves a foul taste in the mouth after you bite your nails.

Q. Why is it that when I get a pedicure sometimes the nail polish doesn't effectively dry?

It is commonly thought because feet are naturally a little colder than hands, it takes longer for polish to dry. Another reason toes may not dry completely is because of the natural oils found in the nail plate. If there is any trace of oils, whether they be natural or from the pedicure treatment itself (lotions, paraffin wax), polish will not dry. Beauty Store tip: Make sure you completely dehydrate toe nails of excess oils before applying polish.

Q. What is the best shape to try to achieve with my nails?

Nails should complement your hand size and cuticle shape. Fashion is showing very long, pointed nails this season, but this dramatic length and shape isn't for everyone. Nails should be tailored to suit each individual, regardless of what fashion dictates.

Before proceeding with shaping your nails, carefully analyze your finger length and thickness, hand size and cuticle shape then follow these guidelines:
1.) Long, rounded, almond tips are the perfect match for petite hands and fingers.
2.) Active-length squovals complement fingers that are long and slim, or short and stocky.
3.) Heavy-set hands and wide nail beds look best with squared-off extensions.
4.) If the cuticle is oval, go with an oval nail, if it is square, create a squoval nail.

Q. I am confused about caring for my cuticles, what should I do?

Although it is tempting to trim, the health implications of cutting cuticles may convince you to think before reaching for your cuticle nippers. The cuticle prevents bacteria from entering the lunula, the whitish area at the nail plate's base, by sealing off the potential space between the root of the nail and the skin. By removing the cuticle, the newly forming nail is left unprotected and vulnerable to infection. Never cut the cuticle: instead push it back gently with a rosewood stick, Hindo stone or rubber-tip cuticle pusher.

Strong cuticle growth should be controlled with a cuticle softener or cuticle remover liquid. The only time you should ever cut is if the cuticle is extremely hard, dry and sticking straight up, but you must be careful not to cut the entire cuticle.

What Nail Treatments are available in Salons?

There are many hair salons now offering not only hair extensions, colouring of hair, hair straightening, your normal cut and blow dry but also nail extensions, acrylic nails, manicures and pedicures and painting of nails. There also salons popping up which only give nail treatments there usually called nail salons.

If you like having luxurious nails, you more than likely been to a nail salon or you may have regular manicures at your local hairdressers. Wherever you may be there’s a hairdresser or nail salon in your area. If you bite your nails and feel whatever nail polish you put on your nails they still look horrible you may want to try acrylic nails or nail extensions.

Acrylic overlays with tips are an extension tip which is added to your natural nails. This is to give extra length of your nails once they’ve been put on a layer of acrylic is applied to strengthen the nail and tip. Once the acrylic is dry a normal nail polish can be applied. You can have an acrylic overlay on your natural nails, this helps to strengthen your nails and keep your natural nails long. You can have glitter acrylic tips if you want something different and a pink or clear acrylic is applied to fill in the back of the nail. If you have tips applied you should have a backfill every two weeks as your nails will grow within this time and so new acrylic is applied and blended into the re-growth.

Manicures and Pedicures are popular nail treatments in salons as a lot of people find them relaxing but also make them feel good. But it’s not only simple manicures and pedicures being offered in a lot of salons but also treatments including: spa level manicures and pedicures, silk and or cotton nail wraps, natural nail care and the use of organic and botanical products for pedicures. You may only want a manicure but there are also different types of those including just a File and Polish, a Luxury Manicure or a Deluxe Manicure. It all depends on what you want and what kind of budget you have.

If you have lovely nails but you’re never satisfied or happy when you apply nail polish, maybe you can’t do your right hand if you’re left-handed or the other way round, maybe you don’t have a still hand and just can’t apply the polish or maybe you just can’t be bothered. If this sounds like you a salon maybe a good place to visit. You can go to a salon choose the nail polish of you choice and have it applied for you they may even buff and polish your nails too so they look super. If you like something different then having a nail painting may be right for you.

Nail painting is where a nail polish can be applied as a base colour but then you can have a drawing of something you like maybe hearts scattered on each nail, a sunset painting, and flowers on the tips of your nails the list is endless. The painting is either done by the nail technician free hand drawing on your nails or water based decals and or gems being stuck to your nails. The new idea is airbrushing designs onto your nails; this gives a fantastic look and is stunning.

Whatever you may want, ask your nearest salon for what nail treatments they offer, and enjoy putting some fun into your nails.

Stop Nail Biting And Follow These 10 Tips for Beautiful Nails

By: Sherry Merrill

You made the decision to stop nail biting. As your nails grow out, you want to keep them healthy and good-looking. To get you started here are 10 tips to grow your nails out into beautiful nails.

1. Your nails were not meant to be screwdrivers. As your nails grow longer and stronger, you'll think about using your nails to help pick and pry things open.

Scraping a price tag off a purchase with your nail may seem easy. Unfortunately it stresses the nail leading to broken nails. Use a knife to remove the tag.

2. Protect your hands and nails like models do. Wear rubber gloves for cleaning and washing dishes. Detergents, cleaning supplies, soap and dishwater dry out your nails, which causes breaks and peeling.

3. Moisturize your cuticles to avoid hangnails. Keep a small container of cuticle oil or moisturizer by your bed. Every night before you go to sleep generously apply the oil or moisturizer to your cuticles.

4. Rough edges on your nails can be annoying. File the rough edge, don't bite it off. Buy a package of emery boards. Place the emery boards in various places throughout your house; in your desk drawer at work and in your purse. So if a rough nail catches on something you're prepared.

5. Use acetone-free nail polish remover to take off nail polish. Acetone based removers quickly remove polish, but remove moisture from nails as well. Nails low in moisture break easily.

6. Buff your nails to shine and increase circulation to your nail beds. Lightly buffing your nails every other day can improve the appearance and growth of your nails. The key is light buffing. Heavy buffing can damage the nail.

7. Avoid fungal infections in and on your nails. When washing your hands, dry them completely. Don't share or borrow manicure tools or emery boards. If you are having a professional manicure, make sure the tools are sterilized between uses. Better yet, bring your own manicure set and emery boards to the salon.

8. Healthy diets help nails grow strong too. Calcium rich foods such as broccoli and milk can help nails grow strong and healthy. You may want to talk with your doctor about taking extra supplements such as biotin to help grow strong nails.

9. Keep cuticles soft and don't cut them. Moisturize the cuticle before bed. Apply hand lotion or cuticle oil, gently pushing back the cuticle. In time the overgrown cuticle tissue will disappear.

Having a professional manicure? Don't let the nail technician cut your cuticles. Cuticles are the first line of defense guarding against infection in your nail beds.

10 Nail infections can easily spread from one nail to the next. So take infections seriously. Avoid poking or picking at a nail infection. Talk to your doctor as you may need to have antibiotics or other treatment to get rid of the infection.

Your plan to stop nail biting is important. Give yourself every possible advantage to growing strong healthy beautiful nails. You owe it to yourself.

Could Manicures Really Be The Secret of Perfect Hands?

Although many of us do not constantly think about our hands, they are permanently on show and everyone can see their condition. Usually one of the most neglected parts of the body, the nails often suffer from being bitten, ripped off and they are rarely cleaned out.

So it is no wonder that they can often cause problems. So what is it that we should be doing? Besides a little general hygiene, there is something else we can do to keep our hands and nails spotless, and that is to have a manicure.

Why Manicures Are Not Just For the Rich and Famous:

When you mention the word manicure, often we think of rich, famous, fake or spoilt women. However, a manicure can really help to keep our hands clean and healthy.

Techniques which are used vary from salon to salon and a manicure can either treat your nails, your hands, or both together. A standard manicure generally consists of the nails being filed, shaped and colored. A French manicure may also be offered, and if you choose to treat your hands they will usually be soaked in a softening substance, followed by an application of hand lotion.

You can even have more luxurious hand manicures known as Paraffin Treatments. This includes dipping your hand into either melted paraffin or wax. The heat is supposed to relax the skin and make it easier for hand lotion to absorb into the skin which is sometimes applied before the hand is dipped into the paraffin. Often the hand is dipped into the melted substance more than once in order to build up a thicker layer of wax which makes coating stay warmer for longer and less likely to tear or break. After the manicurist has finished dipping your hands into the melted substance, they will wrap your hand in either tin foil or plastic and then they are covered in cloth in order to keep the warmth in.

Manicures are not just for women either and many men get a hot oil manicure. This involves cleaning and neatening the cuticles, and softening them with oil.
Whilst manicures might be good for the hands, there is a chance that you could get an infection from the equipment used. This only usually happen if you have not had the treatment done at a professional salon by a qualified person. All manicurists have to be licensed as they are manipulating the hands and trimming them and the risk of infection is recognized.

So, in order to receive the best possible manicure, it is important that you choose a manicurist who is relevantly qualified.

How to Give Yourself a Home Manicure:

Giving yourself a manicure at home is fairly easy once you know how. However, you should ideally make sure that you give yourself plenty of time for one as the average manicure lasts around 45 minutes. If you have ensured that you have got enough time, here are some tips which will help you to give yourself the perfect home manicure:

First Prepare the Hands and Nails

It is essential that you prepare and clean the hands and nails before the manicure. To do this you should wash them thoroughly and then use a double sided emery board to file the nails down in gentle strokes. Try and avoid the corners of the nails as you could weaken them, and then once finished start on shaping them. The most common shape used is the oval but you should choose whichever shape suits your hands better. Once you have finished that, to see how effectively you have done it try and run your nail over something such as pantyhose, and see if the nail snags. If not, you have done a good job!

Now Move to The Cuticles

After preparing the hands, you should now be ready to make a start on the cuticles. First, apply some softener to the cuticles and allow it to absorb for a couple of minutes. Next, place your hands in a bowl of warm water and soak them for another few minutes. Now it is time to push back the cuticles.

When you are pushing back the cuticles it should not hurt. If it does, try and soak them for a little while longer. If there are any hangnails visible, be sure to clip them off. Next it is time to apply hand lotion and start to massage the palm of your hand with your thumb on your opposite hand. This really does help to circulate the blood. Be sure to continue doing this around the rest of the hand and then switch hands, making sure that you use the same amount of time on the opposite hand.

Clean and Polish the Nail

Before any color is applied to the nails, they first need to be cleaned. The easiest way to do this is to use an orange stick wrapped with cotton and dip it into nail polish remover before rubbing it over the surface of the nails.

Next use only a little color on the end of your brush, and paint one stroke down the centre of the nail. If done properly, the brush should have just had enough color to do this. Next brush the other two sides of the nail and you should be finished. It should never take more than three strokes to finish the nail. Now make sure that the polish has a few minutes to set before applying a second coat. After the second coat has dried, apply a top coat which will help to seal the color and keep it looking good for longer.

After you have finished, it is important to sanitize all of the equipment to minimize the risk of infection the next time you use them.

Overall a manicure really can help you to relax, as well as keeping your hands really clean and healthy. Anybody can give themselves one at home as long as they follow the above steps.

Manicure, it’s all in the hands!!

A manicure is a beauty treatment for your hands and fingernails. The most commonly available manicure is the filing, shaping of the nails and the application of nail polish only. There are also manicuring services that are specialties for the hands. Soaking of the hands with a softening substance and application of a lotion is a common specialty. A manicure may also include the application of artificial nail tips, acrylics or artificial nail gels. Some manicures can include the painting of pictures or designs on the nails or applying small decals or imitation jewels. In many areas, manicurists are licensed since skin is maneuvered and sometimes it is trimmed; there is a certain risk of spreading infection when tools are used across many people and therefore sanitation is a serious concern.

Manicure has a history more than 5000 years old. In India, henna has been used for manicures for ages. Much of the modern revival of henna derives from its popularity in India. One of the empresses of China was said to wear very long artificial nails.

The processes of a manicure uses a variety of tools, creams, oils, waxes and massaging techniques to clean or shape your nails, care for your cuticles, and improves the look as well as feel of your hands. There are various kinds of manicures available for you which may include shaping of the nail, use of different oils and creams, or even massage as part of the treatment. Some of the popular manicure methods are French manicure, American manicure, hot stone manicure, hot oil manicure and standardized manicure.

Whichever process of manicure is being followed there are certain tools and supplies that are essentially required. Some of the tools and supplies are - Bowl of warm water or finger bath, Nail clippers, Cuticle knife and clippers, Cuticle pusher/Hoof stick, Nail file/emery board, buffer, scissors and brush etc. and the supplies commonly required are Cuticle remover, Massage lotion, Nail polish, Base coat polish & ridge filler polish, Color varnish, Top coat or sealant, Nail polish remover, Hand cream, Sanitizing spray, towels, Cotton balls & pads etc.

If you are going to the day spas or salons then always keep in mind to enquire and ensure about the sanitation of the area and proper sterilization of the tools being used. The absence of sterilization many lead to the infections and other contagious dermal diseases.

The standard procedure applied by the salons begins with removal of nail polish. Shaping of the nail is the next step. The fingernails are filed into oval tips. Now softening the cuticles is accomplished by soaking the fingers in a small finger bowl filled with soapy water. After this, hand is carefully washed and dried up by holding a small towel and placing the hand on the towel. Cuticle remover is applied. Cuticle is loosened gently with an orangewood stick or cuticle pusher. Free edge under the fingernail is cleaned by dipping a cotton-tipped orangewood stick in soapy water and cleaning under the nail. Cuticle oil or creams are applied at the base of the nail. The nails gently brushed in soapy water with a downward motion. Now the hands and nails are dried thoroughly. Next a very fine emery board is used to give the finishing touch.

Now it is time for the application of nail polish, a base coat is applied using long strokes. After allowing the base coat to dry, Nail polish is applied with light strokes so that excess polish on cuticle or nail can be easily removed with cotton tipped orangewood stick moistened with polish remover. After it is dry the top coat is applied. After that layer of nail polish it is the time for a rejuvenating massage for your hands. Lotions are applied to the hands and the hand is massaged with light rubbing motion.

French manicures use clear or ivory-colored polish on the body of the nail, and white nail tips. American manicure is a very natural-looking manicure. Hot stone manicure features a hand massage using hot stone therapy to soothe and relax your hand. The hands may be dipped in melted paraffin wax. The hand is usually applied with a thicker wax coat, making the coating stay warm for longer and less likely to break too early. After dipping the hands in the wax, they are wrapped in plastic and covered with cloth to retain warmth. Now the hands are left for a few minutes before the paraffin is cooled and dried, after that it is removed. Paraffin waxes are sometimes mixed with various botanical ingredients. Fruit waxes such as peach, apple and strawberry are frequently used in salons.

Hot oil manicure is a specific type of manicure that cleans and softens cuticles with oil. It is very good for dry skin and nails that are brittle. The types of oils used are mineral oil, olive oil.

Other then our feet, our hands do a lot of hard work and are usually the last things hat get pampered. Why not book yourself in for a manicure today.
