Q:
Since I've started working my nails are so thin and are breaking and peeling off like crazy. Is there something that I can have done to help it stop? I bought a nail strengthener, but so far am not seeing results.

A:
First off - are you taking vitamins? The Nioxin vitamins (get at beauty supply or salon, MAYBE even GNC) were developed for healthy hair, but hair and nails are made of the same thing so they help your nails to grow strong from the inside out.

On the outside, Sally Hansen still makes the best nail strengtheners (Sally's Beauty or even grocery store) for a topical, apply at home treatment. Rubbing lots of cuticle oil will help to stimulate the growth of the healthy nails and keep the nails well hydrated too. You don't need a fancy brand - even almond or vitamin e will do the trick!

ALSO - there are new products now called "Shellacs" which are essentially a gel polish that you apply to the natural nail, expose to uv light to cure, and they last like acrylics (up to 2 weeks) - without the damage! This gives your nails some support while they grow - only drawback is you have to get them at the salon, usually $20 - $35 per service. To get the supplies to do them yourself is around a $400 investment (the light is about $300 by itself), but people LOVE them because they don't chip or damage.

With the popularity of body piercing at an all time high, the incidence of infected navel piercing has gained a great deal of attention. If you've recently decided to have your navel pierced, it is a good idea to know what constitutes an infected navel piercing and when the time comes to seek medical attention.

Essentially, any type of body piercing is a wound. Wounds can become infected, even when reasonable attempts at performing the procedure were done in a sterile environment. Don't assume you can't get an infected navel piercing simply because everything was clean and sterile. This means you must be on the lookout for any signs of infection.

It is important to note that the piercing will show a small amount of redness several days after the procedure. There is usually also some crusting over, as with any wound. There may be a small discharge of fluid that appears milky, but this also is to be expected and is not a sign of an infected navel piercing. Typically, these signs will all fade within six weeks to two months, with perhaps only a little residue of redness at the points of entry. One of the first signs of an infected navel piercing will be something outside these typical perimeters. If the redness is accompanied by swelling that does not begin to subside quickly, chances are you do have an infected navel piercing. In like manner, a change from the milky fluid leakage to a thicker discharge that is yellow in nature is a clear sign that you have an infected navel piercing and should seek medical assistance immediately.

Consistent stinging or other pain is another sign of an infected navel piercing. As with any situation where a puncture in the skin has taken place, you can expect some minor irritation for a very brief time. However, if you find that the area remains tender and the pain increases when you are attempting to clean the wound, there is a chance you have an infected navel piercing. Do not let this slide for more than a day or two. If there appears to be no change, then go see your doctor. An infected navel piercing can be easily treated, so there is no lingering damage. However, just as with any type of infection, it is important to have it taken care of as quickly as possible. Minor infections, such as an infected navel piercing, can create significant health problems later on, if not treated in a timely manner.

It’s been a tough day. The kids are finally in bed. You sigh in exhaustion and start walking towards the kitchen looking for comfort. You grab a scoop of ice cream, a handful of cookies or a slice of cake.

You’re stressed out at work. You walk towards the vending machine and buy a candy bar.

You’ve got a bad case of the blahs. When you’re home alone, you dive into the chips, cookies, or other desserts.

When faced with stress, anger, boredom, anxiety or loneliness, it’s very easy to overeat. Maybe you turn to a childhood favorite like ice cream when you need a pick-me-up. Emotional eating isn’t about being hungry physically; it’s about being hungry emotionally. And that’s why no amount of Twinkies or bonbons will truly satisfy. Unfortunately, in the process of trying to find comfort, you’re packing on pounds.

But there’s good news! You don’t have to live as a prisoner to emotional eating. Get control of your eating habits before they take control of you. Here’s how:

1. Call Weight Loss 911 (figuratively speaking!). Call up a friend when you feel down instead of turning to a lifeless carton of ice cream, no matter what flavor. Ask someone to be your accountability partner.

2. Recognize the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger. Here’s a great test for true hunger: do you want to eat snap peas, celery or broccoli? 5. Keep your perimeter secure. Don’t allow unhealthy, high calorie foods into your kitchen. If your pantry is stocked with potato chips, cookies, cakes and sodas, you’re asking for trouble. Save your treats for social events.

Emotional eating is a very hard habit to break, but it can be done. Some days, you’ll do better than others. The key is to keep trying. There will come a day when you’ll automatically turn to a friend instead of the pantry. When that happens, you’ll know you’ve gained a weight loss victory!

But we all know that a spur-of-the-moment haircut is hard to come by. You see, getting a regular trim, even if you think you can squeeze by another week or two, prevents this mess from happening in the first place. Nail Salons & Hygiene - What You Should Know Before Getting Your Nails Done

I recently came across an interesting article on nail salon hygiene while thumbing through a magazine at my local beauty salon.

In this study, a group of 15 nail salon shadow shoppers was asked to visit professional nail salons and report on their hygiene levels. (Naturally, I imagined myself being one of these lucky shadow shoppers and told to "go for it" at the nail parlor and to spare no expense - can you imagine? I'll take a french manicure, no ... wait! Make that a natural nail manicure, definitely a pedicure, gimme the latest nail fashion and make sure you use the best fingernail polish money can buy. Or maybe I'll just go crazy and add Hollywood nails, no ... acrylic nails, no, wait ... how about some nail tattoos, or some airbrushed nail art ... oh I know! give me some of those fabulous Tammy Taylor nails ... my, how lovely it is to daydream!)

Anyway, over 50 nail salons were visited and, according to the study, more than a third of the salons visited were found to be unsatisfactory, with their main complaints being bad hygiene standards, poor customer service and shoddily done manicures.

Upon entering the salon, the participants were instructed to ask for a complete manicure, tell the nail technician that they had never had a professional manicure done before, then ask the salon professional to describe what the process entailed. After the session was over, each of the participants were asked to fill a questionnaire, reporting on various aspects of their experience - levels of hygiene observed, how long the manicure took and how much it cost and whether the experience was satisfactory or not.

According to the report, 92% of the technicians who attempted to use metal cuticle clippers on the shadow shoppers didn't put on gloves. Even worse, they did not use an implement that was package-sealed, even though half of the nail technicians claimed the instrument had been autoclaved (an autoclave is a pressurized device that uses steam and high water pressure to sterilize equipment). The shoppers also reported several hygiene breaches on equipment such as nail files and buffers, which should either be disposable or cleaned between clients. A few salons had surfaces that weren't cleaned between clients and were covered in dust, or even pieces of skin. In one salon, a technician kept her dirty implements in the cash drawer.

Some of the actual comments from the survey participants regarding the low hygiene levels they experienced were as follows:

"The technician picked up the metal scissors ... used on someone else's feet ... she used them to cut some skin from around her own nail. She then went to use them on me."

"This salon had an overpowering smell that burnt my throat and made me feel ill."

"The technicians washed the handtowels in the foot spas."

"Counters and floors were dirty, instruments reused and technicians did not wash their hands at all."

"The technician had open wounds on her hands. I asked her to put gloves on."

If a salon has overpowering fumes, it may be a sign of poor ventilation, especially where a salon engages in a lot of acrylic nail work. The preferred substance for making acrylic nails, ethyl methacrylate, can be hazardous if used in a salon without proper ventilation. A strong, unpleasant odour could also mean they're using dangerous substances, such as Methyl Methacrylate (MMA).

What To Look For In A Nail Salon

Here are some of the things you look for when visiting a nail salon:

- Use only accredited salons and technicians and look for certifications of competency, which should be displayed prominently in the salon.

- The salon should be clean and tidy, with linen and towels changed between clients.

- All chemicals should be in clearly marked containers.

- Metal tools that could penetrate the skin should be sterilized in an autoclave.

- Non-disposable nail implements should be rinsed, scrubbed in tepid water and detergent and dried, or wiped with 70% alcohol between clients.

- Some nail salons keep implements especially set aside for each regular client. You should ask your nail technician to do this for you, if you are a regular client of a nail salon.

- Nail implements need to be clean and dry. Don't let anyone use an implement on you that's been left sitting in water, even if the water contains disinfectant.

- Don't use a foot spa if you've shaved your legs the night before or on the day of the pedicure, of if you have any cuts on your legs, as this makes you more vulnerable to infection.

- If you are having acrylic nails put on, ask your nail artist to explain the procedure, what products they're going to use and how to care for the nails at home.

- Don't be shy to ask questions about the manicure, the chemicals being used and how the implements have been cleaned.

The salon I normally go to is very professional and clean, the technicians are highly competent and certified and all procedures are explained in great detail when asked. So, I went ahead and pampered myself for almost an hour and got myself some beautiful nails (included in the manicure was a nail bath, filing and buffing and cuticle work) and a massage. Maybe next time I'll go for nail tattoos or those Tammy Taylor nails!

that are higher in price are now going out of their way to

With Nail Salons on every corner, how do you pick the right one
for you? There are many different types of Nail Salons, from your

luxury. How can you tell which one is right for what you want

Each nail technician in a higher-end salon should be dressed for
success or wear a smock with the nail salon's name on it. They
are typically not gossiping among themselves about other clients

Salon clients consulted in the preparation of this article made a

The biggest difference between higher priced and discount Nail
Salons is the level of cleanliness of the whole Salon, including
the equipment and technicians. This should be the most basic
criteria of choice.

Based on that, if you can't decide whether you want to go to a
discount nail salon or one that is higher priced, then here are a
few additional ideas that might help you decide.

When you walk into a nail salon, either discount or higher in
price, stop and look around. Are the floors dirty, or does the
carpet have big stains on it? What do the nail technicians look
like? Do they look unkempt or have nails of their own that look
like they need work? Are their stations disorganized and untidy?
If this is what you are seeing, then the best thing you could do
is just turn and walk away.

A health inspector we interviewed said that when she visited a
particular nail salon, her first impression was that it looked
clean, and the prices were reasonable. Then she began her close
examination. What she saw was down right scary for the salon's
customers. The whirlpool for pedicures wasn't properly
disinfected between each use, and the footbaths provided the
perfect environment for the growth of dangerous bacteria. When
tested, the bacteria growing in the footbaths could have caused
someone a major skin infection. Unfortunately, official
inspectors regularly inspecting Salon premises are not as common
as they once were. If the possibility of infection is something
you are worried about, then a higher end nail salon would be a
better choice, because they can afford to take better care of
their equipment and are typically more conscious of the welfare
of their clients.

Today you can buy your own simple equipment for your nail
technician to use on your nails and no one else's. Many
technicians use nail files that are single use. You can ask for
them, if that is something you would rather have used on your
nails.

Nail technicians are there to give a service. If they do a great
job, please don't to forget to tip them - they have to eat too.

If you are not sure which Salon to patronize, ask your
friends,family or work colleagues for recommendations about where
they go to get their nails done. If you see someone with nails
that you admire, don't hesitate to ask them for a recommendation
to their favorite Salon. Go with your friends and see their
favorite salons for yourself, before having any work on done on
your own nails.

Which Salon you choose should be based on many if not most of the

When I was in school to become a manicurist (nearly 20 years ago), it was not very common to have male clients. I was one of the few who had a gentleman come in once a week to have his nails trimmed, filed, and buffed. Now, he was not there because he had feminine tendencies, he just wanted to look the best that he could, from head to toe, and he kept himself up well. This included his hands and nails.

Today, things are much different. Although I am not in the business anymore, I tend to notice the professional products that are selling well and new lines that are out. I also notice the manicurists when I enter a salon where they are visible. It used to amaze me when I would see a man at a manicure station, but I see it so often now that it is no longer a shock. Male grooming has been on the rise for several years and the products offered in your local discount store prove it. Even without major marketing campaigns, the male lines are selling like crazy. This interest in male grooming includes better hand and nail care for many men.

Ten years ago, when I was still doing manicures as a service offered through my cosmetology, I was charging $15 per manicure. This was just a simple manicure, which takes much less time than a ladies manicure as there is no polishing and drying involved although I did apply a clear, matte finish to some nails on men. The main salon I visit now is charging $25 to $30 for a mans manicure, depending on the effort and time involved.

The matte finish clear polish was what I now see as the beginning of the progression of products designed for male manicures. Actually, the company who made it promoted it (to manicurists and cosmetologists, not the general public) as a polish for men. Today, I often see this matte finish polish on manicure stations when they have a male client.

You can achieve the same effect at home without spending as much as you would for one manicure in the salon I use. The money you initially spend will cover future manicures as well with replacement of certain implements on occasion. While you can purchase full kits for as much as $60, there is absolutely no need for that.

To perform an at home manicure, you will need: a 4 way buffer, a pair of nail clippers (I recommend toenail clippers because of the width of the nail), a soft toothbrush, a hand towel or washcloth, and a bowl filled with warm water and a mild, antibacterial soap. If you like, you may want to get a bottle of cuticle oil, but many men opt to avoid this step. Even if you have just washed you hands, you need to use the antibacterial soap in your water; if you should happen to cut yourself, you do not want bacteria to enter the wound.

Dip one hand in the warm water for about five minutes. Take it out, brush the tops of the nails and under the free edge (white tip), and dry with your hand towel (or washcloth). To dry the nails, rub the towel up your nail, pushing against the cuticle. If you always dry your hands this way (after hand washing, showering, etc), your cuticles will naturally become exfoliated and look neater. I do not recommend using cuticle nippers or scissors because they will cause your cuticle to become thicker in time.

Trim your nails using the nail clippers. This should not go into the corners of the nail as it can cause a variety of conditions (especially on toes when you cut the corners too deep).
On your 4 way buffer, you can feel the different grits by feeling how rough each section is. Use the roughest section and file the free-edge, rounding the corners (you do not want to scratch anyone).

Using the surface that is the slightly smoother, go back along the edges, removing the filings that you can see. Rub your finger across each edge, smoothing rough places with this same section of the file.

Now, using the smoothest surface (aside from the grey, rubber section), lightly buff the tops of your nails to remove light ridges. Deep ridges cannot be removed because you file too much nail away trying to get rid of them.

Finally, buff the nail with the rubber section of your 4 way buffer. If you opted to use cuticle oil (I recommend it when you have dry, splitting cuticles), apply a tiny amount to each cuticle and massage into the nail and cuticle.

Generally speaking a woman that is considering this procedure can expect a one or more bra cup size increase in size. It is important to remember that while the surgery may enhance your appearance it is not going to make you look like your ideal.

It is important that when considering this procedure like any other procedure that you have realistic expectations about what you will look like after the procedure is complete. The biggest complication is that of being unhappy with the results because of unrealistic expectations. The idea behind breast augmentation surgery is improvement and not perfection in ones appearance.

The implants are made of a silicone shell that is filled with either silicone gel or a saltwater solution called saline. Do to the uncertainty about leakage of silicone and its affects on your health the FDA has ruled that the only women able to get silicone gel implants must be part of an approved study. All other women will receive the saline filled silicon shell implants because they have proven to be safe over the course of time.

The FDA recently reapproved the silicon implant after a 13 year hiatus, maintaining new eveidence shows this implant to be safe.

If we are to look at the risks involved with the surgery the most common risk is for capsular contracture to occur. This is when the scar or capsule around the implant begins to tighten resulting in the soft tissue being squeezed and the breast feeling hard.

As with any other surgery there is always a concern for swelling and pain. In the worst cases of capsular contracture it can result in scoring the scar or the removal and replacement of the implant itself. There is also the risk of an infection forming around the implant. There is a risk for some women to suffer from sensitivity issues or numbness of the nipples after the surgery. If this does occur you should let your doctor know right away. The affect is generally short term but in rare cases can be permanent in some patients.

There is no evidence that having breast augmentation surgery will affect your ability to get pregnant or to be able to nurse after you deliver your baby. If you are having the surgery to correct reduction after pregnancy and you nursed within a year before having the procedure you will experience some milk production and leakage. There have been cases where the implant has broken and leaked as a result of an injury or breast compression. If this does occur the breast will deflate within a couple of hours and the saline will be reabsorbed into the body.

If the implant contains gel and leakage occurs what happens will be determined by if the scar capsule is ruptured or not. If it is not ruptured than you will most likely not notice any change, it does rupture than the silicone gel will leak into the surrounding tissue. There is no evidence that breast implants cause breast cancer. When you se your surgeon prior to surgery you will evaluate all your options and recommendations will be made for a proper course of treatment. If your breasts are sagging than a breast lift may be recommended. In any case be sure to discuss your expectations frankly with your surgeon to make you are both have the same understanding of what the results are supposed to be.

You should also follow all the recommendations of your surgeon prior to surgery. The surgery is generally performed in the surgeons office or an outpatient facility and occasionally it will be performed in a hospital depending on the circumstances for the surgery. The placement of the incision and the implant will be determined by your anatomy and the surgeons recommendations.

The surgeon will make the incision and insert the implant behind the breast or under the chest wall muscle and then center the implant behind the nipple. You can expect to be up and about within 48 hours after surgery. The gauze will be removed within a few days of surgery and you will be given a surgical bra. You will wear this for about two weeks. Full healing will take about 4-6 weeks and the discomfort will diminish with time.

therapies have been used extensively by doctors to treat a wide
range of health problems, such as vascular disease, cancer, viral
diseases, ulcers, inflammatory bowel diseases and spinal disc
problems. Additionally, these treatments are effective therapies
for contaminated wounds, burns and infections. The use of oxygen
to heal is based on the idea that it breaks down and eliminates
toxins from the body by "burning" them through the process of
oxidation.

In the process of ozone and oxidative therapies white blood cell
production is also encouraged, there is an increased delivery of
oxygen to the cells, red blood cell flexibility is expanded and
metabolism is also stimulated. Because of its ability to kill
bacteria and fungus, many cities purify their drinking water with
ozone.

Ozone therapy can be received in one of several ways, including
injection, inseffulation, ozone "bagging," external use of

stores, is made by bubbling ozone through olive oil for several

olive oil to the affected nail several times daily until the
fungus has died and the healthy nail has regrown.

Oxidation therapy is commonly administered via hydrogen peroxide.
Because the body's cells produce hydrogen peroxide as a first
line of defense when confronted with bacteria, parasites and
yeast, it is known as an effective and natural immune system
booster. To treat nail fungus with oxidation therapy, a finger
soak is the best application. It is wisest to use food grade
hydrogen peroxide (35%) as the over the counter solution (3%)
contains other chemicals and impurities that may adversely affect
sensitive skin. Mix 2 ounces of the food grade type with warm
water and soak the nails infected with the fungus for 30 minutes.
If using the over the counter version, you will need nearly
twelve times the hydrogen peroxide to make an equally effective
solution. Repeat this treatment three to four times per week
until the infection has cleared.

Hydrogen peroxide is an extremely safe and effective treatment
for nail fungus when used with care. Because the pure form of the
solution is highly toxic and dangerous, it is absolutely
necessary to take care when using this home treatment by always
diluting it correctly. When administered in proper amounts this
form of treatment has shown great promise in the healing of many
ailments, including nail fungus.

When treating your nail fungus with ozone or oxidative therapy,
the success of the treatment depends entirely on your willingness
to continually treat the nail as directed and to continue your
chosen course of therapy for a considerable amount of time. The
treatment of nail fungus is so lengthy due to the fact even after
the fungus has died and the nail begins to clear, the treatment
must continue until the infected portion of the nail has
completely grown out. Unfortunately, because the cure for nail
fungus can take six months or longer, many people choose to live
with it rather than take measures to combat it.

Once the fungus has been effectively killed and the nail is
completely healthy, it is vital to take steps to ensure that the
fungus does not return. Keeping nails clean and trim is important
to ensure that the fungus cannot make a home under the nail.
Never pick at hangnails or other skin around the nails; germs can
more easily find a way into your nails if you do. When your hands
are to be exposed to water for prolonged periods of time, use
rubber gloves and make sure to give the gloves ample time to dry
inside out after use.

If you typically have your nails done at a salon, be sure that it
is a reputable one that understands the importance of sterilizing
all manicure equipment. It also may be necessary to discontinue
using nail polish or artificial nails as they can trap moisture
under the polish and encourage the growth of fungus. It is also

A Guide To Pampering Pedicures

It is time for your hard working feet to take a break.

Whether your feet need a boost before going summertime bare or your pedicure is a gift you give to a loved one’s tired toes, pedicures are easy to do at home.

Whether you are doing it for yourself or someone else, the procedure is the same, although it’s easier to massage someone else’s feet than it is to completely massage your own.

To start, you will need a footbath or large, wide bowl. Choose from a selection of bath and essential oils, foot scrubs, or fizzing bath bombs. Organize toe nail clipper, emery board, nail buffer, spongy toe separators (if planning to polish toenails), nail brush, and follow-up scented foot lotion. In addition, you’ll need towels for catching spills, and drying freshly washed feet. If you have nail polish on your toe nails, remove polish thoroughly before starting the pedicure.

Take the bowl or footbath and fill it with warm to hot water. Give yourself the hottest water your feet can take for optimum softening of the tough heel skin, and to promote relaxation. Toss in a fizzing bath bomb. Most are made with scent and Epsom salts, and, when added to water, turn a simple bath, or in this case, a simple footbath, into a bubbling, tickling massage. Add a drop of your favoring essential oil - lavender is a relaxing choice.

While feet are wet, use a foot scrub to soften the calluses built up during everyday exercise and ordinary tasks. Be gentle. If the tough skin on your feet has been building up over a few years, realize that it may take a few weekly pampering pedicures to bring your feet back to softness.

Rinse foot scrub off feet in the cooling footbath. Feet can soften in the footbath for a total of about five minutes, or until water is too cool for enjoyment.. Gently dry off feet with an absorbent towel.

While skin and nails are soft, take a few minutes to gently push back toe nail cuticles with an angled cuticle stick. Use big toe nail clippers to cut toe nails straight across. A caution: do not clip them too short for this can cause problems with ingrown toe nails as the cut nails grow back. Grab the nail brush and scrub across the tip of nails and on the top of the nails. This is a safer way to clean out gunk under nails than to poke a stick underneath the tip and down the side of nails.

Now for the foot massage. If you are giving yourself a pedicure, don’t skip this step no matter how awkward or difficult it may seem. Massaging feet increases blood circulation, relaxes muscles and relieves aches and pains. Any lotion will do but using a peppermint oil foot lotion brings added benefits: the peppermint also promotes blood circulation in the foot, and overpowers lingering foot odor. You can start at either end of your foot, but make sure the entire foot receives the benefit of the massage.

Pour a quarter-sized dollop of lotion into your hand and start at the heel, rubbing repeatedly with a light touch, softening skin and soothing stresses. Move up the foot, rubbing lotion in the bottom of the foot. Use thumbs to make small circles as you work your way over the sole. Pressure can be increased anywhere it feels good. In fact, ticklish feet prefer a firmer hand; it’s the light touch that tickles most!

Pay extra attention to the toes. Rub between toes, using a gentle touch. Finish by rubbing each toe individually. Give both feet equal care.

Finish with the toe nails. File any jagged or sharp edges and shape the toe nail. Even if you do not want to polish the toenails, use a nail buffer to smooth nail ridges for a clean, healthy look.

If possible, use a nail buffer that has three separate finishes. Start with the roughest surface first and give each nail 20 strokes. Give each nail 20 more strokes with next surface, and finish with 20 buffing strokes with the finest surface on the nail buffer. Use that goofy looking sponge toe separator. This tool keeps polish from smearing as toes bump together.

When polishing toe nails, keep in mind the beating your feet take during the day. Start with a clear base coat of polish to prevent the yellowing on the toenails resulting from dark polish painted directly on the nail. Two coats of color will help the nails stay attractive for up to two weeks. Finish with two sheer coats of a protective top coat to keep your pedicure looking great.

Ingrown nails (unguis incarnatus), are a common form of nail disease. Onychocryptosis also known as Ingrown nails. Ingrown nails may develop for many reasons. Some cases are congenital--the nail is just too large for the toe. Trauma, such as stubbing the toe or having the toe stepped on, may also cause an ingrown nail. However, the most common cause is tight shoe wear or improper grooming and trimming of the nail. Poor maintenance, like cutting the nail too short, rounded off at the tip or peeled off at the edges (versus being cut straight across), is likely to cause ingrowth. Some In growing toe nails are acute which means that they have occurred due to a injury to the toe. Others are chronic, which means the patient has had the problem for a long period of time. The large toe is usually affected, however, it can also affect the lesser toes.

Symptoms of an ingrown nail include pain along the margins of the nail (caused by hypergranulation that occurs around the aforementioned region). Some ingrown toenails are chronic, with repeated episodes of pain and infection. Irritation, redness, an uncomfortable sensation of warmth, as well as swelling can result from an ingrown toenail. Bumping of an affected toe with objects can produce sharp, even excruciating, pain as the tissue is punctured further by the ingrown nail. By the very nature of the condition, ingrown nails become easily infected unless special care is taken to treat the condition early on and keep the area as clean as possible. Signs of infection include redness and swelling of the area around the nail, drainage of pus and watery discharge tinged with blood. The main symptom is swelling at the base of the nail on whichever side (if not both sides) the ingrowing nail is forming. The infection can spread, making the toe red and inflamed (paronychia). A collection of pus may also develop.

Ingrown toenails should be treated as soon as they are recognized. Treatment of ingrown nails ranges from soaking the afflicted area to surgery. Sometimes antibiotics are used to help the infection clear after the nail has been removed. Peroxide is immediately effective to help clean minor infections but iodine is more effective in the long term as it continues to prevent bacterial growth even after it is dry. The problem is congenital, the best way to prevent ingrown toenails is to protect the feet from trauma and wear shoes with adequate room for the toes. Soak the foot in warm water 3-4 times daily. Bandages can help keep out bacteria but one should never apply any of the new types of spray-on bandages to ingrown nails that show any discharge - preventing drainage will likely cause intense swelling and pain. Cutting toe nails properly goes a long way toward the prevention of ingrown toenails. Using a safety nail clipper, cut the nails straight across, so that the nail corner is visible. Trim nails straight across. Don't pick at your nails or tear them at the corners. If the nail is not deeply ingrown, the edge of the nail can be lifted from the skin edge that it is irritating. A small piece of clean cotton can then be used to prop the nail's corner up and over the skin edge until the skin heals.

It is essential that you prepare and clean the hands and nails before the manicure. To do this you should wash them thoroughly and then use a double sided emery board to file the nails down in gentle strokes. Try and avoid the corners of the nails as you could weaken them, and then once finished start on shaping them. The most common shape used is the oval but you should choose whichever shape suits your hands better. Once you have finished that, to see how effectively you have done it try and run your nail over something such as pantyhose, and see if the nail snags. If not, you have done a good job!

Now Move to The Cuticles

After preparing the hands, you should now be ready to make a start on the cuticles. First, apply some softener to the cuticles and allow it to absorb for a couple of minutes. Next, place your hands in a bowl of warm water and soak them for another few minutes. Now it is time to push back the cuticles.

When you are pushing back the cuticles it should not hurt. If it does, try and soak them for a little while longer. If there are any hangnails visible, be sure to clip them off. Next it is time to apply hand lotion and start to massage the palm of your hand with your thumb on your opposite hand. This really does help to circulate the blood. Be sure to continue doing this around the rest of the hand and then switch hands, making sure that you use the same amount of time on the opposite hand.

Clean and Polish the Nail

Before any color is applied to the nails, they first need to be cleaned. The easiest way to do this is to use an orange stick wrapped with cotton and dip it into nail polish remover before rubbing it over the surface of the nails.

Next use only a little color on the end of your brush, and paint one stroke down the centre of the nail. If done properly, the brush should have just had enough color to do this. Next brush the other two sides of the nail and you should be finished. It should never take more than three strokes to finish the nail. Now make sure that the polish has a few minutes to set before applying a second coat. After the second coat has dried, apply a top coat which will help to seal the color and keep it looking good for longer.

After you have finished, it is important to sanitize all of the equipment to minimize the risk of infection the next time you use them.

Overall a manicure really can help you to relax, as well as keeping your hands really clean and healthy. Anybody can give themselves one at home as long as they follow the above steps.

A manicure is a beauty treatment for your hands and fingernails. The most commonly available manicure is the filing, shaping of the nails and the application of nail polish only. There are also manicuring services that are specialties for the hands. Soaking of the hands with a softening substance and application of a lotion is a common specialty. A manicure may also include the application of artificial nail tips, acrylics or artificial nail gels. Some manicures can include the painting of pictures or designs on the nails or applying small decals or imitation jewels. In many areas, manicurists are licensed since skin is maneuvered and sometimes it is trimmed; there is a certain risk of spreading infection when tools are used across many people and therefore sanitation is a serious concern.

Manicure has a history more than 5000 years old. In India, henna has been used for manicures for ages. Much of the modern revival of henna derives from its popularity in India. One of the empresses of China was said to wear very long artificial nails.

The processes of a manicure uses a variety of tools, creams, oils, waxes and massaging techniques to clean or shape your nails, care for your cuticles, and improves the look as well as feel of your hands. There are various kinds of manicures available for you which may include shaping of the nail, use of different oils and creams, or even massage as part of the treatment. Some of the popular manicure methods are French manicure, American manicure, hot stone manicure, hot oil manicure and standardized manicure.

Whichever process of manicure is being followed there are certain tools and supplies that are essentially required. Some of the tools and supplies are - Bowl of warm water or finger bath, Nail clippers, Cuticle knife and clippers, Cuticle pusher/Hoof stick, Nail file/emery board, buffer, scissors and brush etc. and the supplies commonly required are Cuticle remover, Massage lotion, Nail polish, Base coat polish & ridge filler polish, Color varnish, Top coat or sealant, Nail polish remover, Hand cream, Sanitizing spray, towels, Cotton balls & pads etc.

If you are going to the day spas or salons then always keep in mind to enquire and ensure about the sanitation of the area and proper sterilization of the tools being used. The absence of sterilization many lead to the infections and other contagious dermal diseases.

The standard procedure applied by the salons begins with removal of nail polish. Shaping of the nail is the next step. The fingernails are filed into oval tips. Now softening the cuticles is accomplished by soaking the fingers in a small finger bowl filled with soapy water. After this, hand is carefully washed and dried up by holding a small towel and placing the hand on the towel. Cuticle remover is applied. Cuticle is loosened gently with an orangewood stick or cuticle pusher. Free edge under the fingernail is cleaned by dipping a cotton-tipped orangewood stick in soapy water and cleaning under the nail. Cuticle oil or creams are applied at the base of the nail. The nails gently brushed in soapy water with a downward motion. Now the hands and nails are dried thoroughly. Next a very fine emery board is used to give the finishing touch.

Now it is time for the application of nail polish, a base coat is applied using long strokes. After allowing the base coat to dry, Nail polish is applied with light strokes so that excess polish on cuticle or nail can be easily removed with cotton tipped orangewood stick moistened with polish remover. After it is dry the top coat is applied. After that layer of nail polish it is the time for a rejuvenating massage for your hands. Lotions are applied to the hands and the hand is massaged with light rubbing motion.

French manicures use clear or ivory-colored polish on the body of the nail, and white nail tips. American manicure is a very natural-looking manicure. Hot stone manicure features a hand massage using hot stone therapy to soothe and relax your hand. The hands may be dipped in melted paraffin wax. The hand is usually applied with a thicker wax coat, making the coating stay warm for longer and less likely to break too early. After dipping the hands in the wax, they are wrapped in plastic and covered with cloth to retain warmth. Now the hands are left for a few minutes before the paraffin is cooled and dried, after that it is removed. Paraffin waxes are sometimes mixed with various botanical ingredients. Fruit waxes such as peach, apple and strawberry are frequently used in salons.

Hot oil manicure is a specific type of manicure that cleans and softens cuticles with oil. It is very good for dry skin and nails that are brittle. The types of oils used are mineral oil, olive oil.

About Scheduling:
I use an online scheduling system to manage ALL of my appointments. You can access it by clicking on the "Set Your Appointment" link above. This is provided as a convenience for you so that you may schedule/manage your appointments any time of day without having to wait for the salon to open or for a message to be returned. The system is very accurate, and will only allow you to see times that I am available. You will have your own private access page where you will be able to manage all of your appointments with me. It will also send you a friendly email reminder! It will tell you the date and time, and even the cost of your appointment. It also allows you to pay for your appointment in advance!

I do NOT do weekends! After 22 years in business and six children - my schedule is FULL! I offer early morning and evening appointments on my salon days, my hours on those days are 8:00am - 10:00pm.

I require a 24 hour notice when cancelling - that allows me to give your appointment to someone on my waiting list if you are unable to attend. Unfortunately, so many people have abused my former generosity by failing to show - and failing to notify me, that I had to get very strict about my cancellation policy. I understand that things come up - text me, email me, reschedule on your own online - IN ADVANCE. If you miss your appointment, or "no show" without notice, you will be charged for the missed appointment, and will not be able to receive another service from me until it is paid. If you happen to "no show" me TWICE you will not be able to re-book with me!

Sometimes there is confusion about an appointment - I understand that - if this should be the case, please email me and explain your side of things or ask questions, and we WILL get it worked out. I am pretty reasonable when there have been extenuating circumstances!

It is quite simple really - I invest in the BEST products available so that YOU may have the best service available. You would not want me to use substandard or dangerous products on you or cut corners as the ramifications can be severe. Therefore I choose to INVEST in my tools because I have your best interests at heart.

About Phone Calls:
I do NOT take personal phone calls - I communicate EXCLUSIVELY through email and text - for many reasons. I like to give my client 100% of my attention when she/he is in my chair. When I take personal phone calls it take me away from them and delays the appointment.
